Hey Baby talks about grim dating experiences in her new single ''Just Another Boy''

Hey Babey’s new single Just Another Boy and accompanying music video directed by Gee Small, is an amusing way of telling a story and exploring the dark comedy of modern dating.

The rising Australian alt-pop artist Hey Baby pulls no punches when it comes to the grim and quite often absurd reality of dating in the 21st century. Released ahead of her debut EP (dropping November 28), the track is an account of post-breakup life, reflecting on the raw awkwardness, confusion and outright ridiculousness of re-entering the dating pool after a long-term relationship.

“I had no experience with online dating, I had no idea how that shit worked” Hey Baby confesses. “The song is a bit of tongue-in-cheek on my dating experience since being single, and the pretty bad, now laughable experience I had”.

Directed by Gee Small, the accompanying music video turns that crazy and emotional messiness into cinematic gold. A boxing rink, filled with men and Hey Baby dominating the space, truly captures the term “Just Another Boy”. With a visual flair that straddles satire and sincerity, the video amplifies the chaos and emotional whiplash of modern dating, all while Hey Baby maintains her characteristic wink to the audience. It’s playful, painful and cathartic, just like the song itself.

Musically, Just Another Boy is an introduction to the electric world of Hey Baby’s upcoming EP. Created alongside longtime friend and producer Oscar Sharah, the EP is a genre-fluid exploration of alt-pop, rock, and dance. It is a blend that reflects her diverse influences and creative instincts. “I love the intimacy and songwriting in ALT pop/rock” Hey Babe says “But i also love a dance track that makes me wanna lose myself every time i put it on. My focus has been on bringing these two worlds together”.

The balance between vulnerability and escapism defines the EP’s core. Co-written in part with songwriter Hannah Brewer, the project is less about fitting into a sound and more about chasing one. “This EP has me and Oscar testing the waters, figuring out what I love and we got there in the end” Hey Baby reflects. “Listening to this EP will be like watching me paint my art canvas, I've just thrown all my creative ideas down and saw what stuck”.

While “Just Another Boy” is certainly catchy, with pulsing beats and razor-sharp lyrics, it is also a statement. It’s Hey Baby telling her story on her own terms: jaded, joyful, and deeply human. If this single is anything to go by, the full EP promises a vivid, unfiltered ride through heartbreak, healing, and the hilarity of trying to date again in a digital world with swipes and situationships.

The EP drops November 28. Until then, “Just Another Boy” stands as both a warning and a war cry: modern dating is messy.
